Why Is the N Backwards? The Story Behind the FindJoy Logo

People ask us about the backwards N more than anything else. The short answer: it was never a design choice. It is a child's handwriting, and we never corrected it.

Where the logo came from

In 2016, FindJoy founder Shelby Dutton was helping a 9-year-old girl who was battling pediatric cancer, along with her family. At some point that girl wrote the word down herself, in her own hand: findJoy. The N came out backwards, the way a lot of kids write it.

That handwriting became the FindJoy logo. It is on every product we make. We did not clean it up, straighten it, or hand it to a designer to redraw, because the imperfection is the point.

What the backwards N means

When life turns you around with an unexpected diagnosis or obstacle, we encourage you to find joy in the middle of the chaos. The backwards N is what being turned around looks like on paper.

At times that feels impossible. But even small things bring joy into a hard day. For our family, that has been Pop Rock loaded chocolate bars, craft supplies overtaking a hospital bed, and friendship. When you look for it, you will find joy.

Where that girl is now

She was the first family FindJoy supported, and she received the first Box of JOY. More than seven years later, she has moved to the survivorship clinic. Her handwriting still carries the brand.

The designs that use it

The handwritten logo appears on the Classic FindJoy tee, and the backwards-N design has its own line in the FindJoy Flip-N tee and the youth Flip-N tee.

10% of every sale goes directly to children and families battling childhood illness. Read more about FindJoy or meet the families behind our designs.
